I attended a Christian Science Sunday School as a child, but it was not until I went away to college that I made Christian Science my own. There I learned to be a Christian Scientist.

I expected college to be wonderful and exciting, but after a month I came to the conclusion that I was miserable. I had all the signs of being a superb wallflower. However, I realized soon afterward that I could do something about the situation, so I began to pray earnestly to God to show me how to become the outgoing, confident, well-liked, and truly happy person I desired to be.

The Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly that week was on "Love." I read the following quotation from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, as if I had never read it before (p. 454): "Love inspires, illumines, designates, and leads the way. Right motives give pinions to thought, and strength and freedom to speech and action." And further in the same paragraph: "Wait patiently for divine Love to move upon the waters of mortal mind, and form the perfect concept. Patience must 'have her perfect work.'"
