Ecology and Health

The natural world seems to take care of itself pretty well. Forests stay green, streams pure, the atmosphere fresh and clear. But when mankind interfere, things often go wrong. When they attempt to destroy the big bugs, for example, the little bugs they eat may increase out of all proportion. These can destroy vegetation. But worse, the chemicals can pollute streams and threaten ocean life on which we depend for the air we breathe.

Normally the human body remains in good health as long as the organs and organisms in the body maintain a proper balance. But when organisms foreign to the body are introduced into the system, a kind of destructive pollution may take place. If chemicals are introduced into the body to combat destructive organisms, these chemicals often also destroy some of the organisms that are a normal part of the functioning of the body, and the balance of nature is upset. Then, in some cases, other drugs may have to be introduced to combat the organisms that have multiplied because they are no longer counterbalanced by the ones the first drugs destroyed.

In other words, the health of men, and their environment, seems directly related to their obedience to laws of nature. But here we may ask a fundamental question: Are the laws of nature God's laws—laws of Life? If they are, then it is certainly man's business to obey these laws, to study them, and to live as governed by them. But when one considers the fact of healing as Christ Jesus practiced it and taught it, and as Christian Science reveals it today, we must conclude that there is an alternative. Instead of looking at nature and finding there the law of God, we can look to God and gain from Him the true laws of nature. There is a difference.
