As one brought up by a Christian Science mother, I had many proofs of God's loving care and protection. One healing was that of a locked knee, which had resulted from an injury I received when the metal stem of a faucet, from which the handle had been removed, penetrated my kneecap. The wound was healed through the prayerful work of a Christian Science practitioner, but the leg remained stiff at first, and I could not bend my knee. Continued treatment by the practitioner and the support of the uplifting thought of my mother brought about a complete healing.
During three years as an Army Air Force pilot, I experienced many proofs of the Psalmist's words, "The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore" (Ps. 121:8).
On one occasion while I was flying over the Rocky Mountains in a single engine craft, the engine began to cut out. There were jagged peaks below, but these words came to my thought: "The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms" (Deut. 33:27). The engine never completely failed and maintained enough power to enable me to clear the highest peaks and land without mishap.
