I feel that my life really began about sixty-five years ago when...

I feel that my life really began about sixty-five years ago when I was given some Christian Science literature. My first healing occurred during a very painful attack of sore throat, so severe that I could neither swallow nor speak. I had been subject to such attacks about twice every year since early childhood.

I learned there was a Christian Science practitioner five miles from our farm. As we had no telephone, I could not make an appointment, so I wrote a note explaining my difficulty, drove in by horse and wagon, and handed her the note. She was just going out but received me very lovingly, invited me in, and upon my request immediately began her treatment through prayer. It was all a mystery to me, but I had an open mind, since I had already tried numerous medical treatments, including repeated lancing, with no improvement.

After sitting with her in silence a few minutes, feeling very tired from illness and the recent jolting of the wagon, I began to experience an indescribable sensation. It was just as if the room were being gradually flooded with sunlight, although it was past seven o'clock in the evening. I felt so much better that I ventured to ask for a drink of water. My voice sounded so natural that it surprised me. And when I discovered that I was now able to swallow, with no pain whatever, I suddenly realized that I had been healed. Although the Christian Science literature had prepared my thought to a certain extent, this experience still seemed too wonderful to be true. I felt so inspired and happy that I sang all the way home. This was the end of my recurrent attacks of sore throat and the beginning of a new life for me in Christian Science.
