About the year 1897, when I was a very young man, I was...

About the year 1897, when I was a very young man, I was employed by a large firm of grocers in London, England. At that time sugar came in sacks weighing 224 pounds. One day my chum, who was like myself, slight-built and lightweight, bet me tuppence that I couldn't lift two sacks of sugar off the floor.

I succeeded in lifting 448 pounds five or six inches from the floor, when something inside me seemed to snap. I had great difficulty in breathing or standing up straight. I went to a doctor, who told me I had a very bad rupture and would need to wear a medical support the rest of my life. In a few days I could walk normally, but if I attempted to leave the support off, I could not walk across the street.

In due course I got interested in Christian Science. After ten years in Science I still wore the support. Then one night after my bath, and in preparing to dress, I put my hand out for the support, when the thought struck me, "I do not need that support. God is my support. A matter body has no intelligence or sensation. God formed me as His spiritual likeness, and I reflect the one Mind, which is wholly good. I cannot be aware of what God doesn't know."
