Mary Baker Eddy says on page 570 of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: "Millions of unprejudiced minds—simple seekers for Truth, weary wanderers, athirst in the desert—are waiting and watching for rest and drink. Give them a cup of cold water in Christ's name, and never fear the consequences."
I would like to give thanks for the "cup of cold water in Christ's name" a neighbor offered me. She was a stranger to me, although she had met my young son, who attended school with her boy. One day when it was raining, she came to my house to see if she could take my children's rain clothes to them. I expressed my gratitude for her kindness but said that I would walk along with her. In our conversation I told her that my husband had tuberculosis and was in a sanatorium. I also told her that the doctors had said that he would never recover. She asked me if I had ever thought about Christian Science. I said that I had never known much about it but would be willing to try anything.
The next day I went to visit my husband and told him how I had heard of Christian Science. He said that he too would be willing to try this religion. That evening on my way home I stopped at this woman's house and told her that we were ready to try Christian Science. She handed me a list of the practitioners who were members of the branch church that I would be attending, explaining to me that she could not tell me one to call but that I would be guided by God. After looking over the list I picked the name that appealed to me and called her. I told her that my husband was supposed to be dying of tuberculosis and one child had just been returned to me after having spent a year hospitalized with the same disease. This child was having a difficult time trying to readjust to homelife. Another child was asthmatic, one suffered from chronic constipation, and another from migraine. I was supposed to have pleurisy and had to be X-rayed every month.
