Christian Science has indeed blessed my home and family, and it is with great joy that I write this testimony of gratitude. From an early age I had the privilege of attending a Christian Science Sunday School. The teaching received established a firm foundation for my life. I am grateful for the constant and loving support of a husband who is a Christian Scientist and for the blessings we have shared in applying the truths of our religion to our marriage and family.
Mrs. Eddy's definition of "children" in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health, includes this statement (p. 582): "The spiritual thoughts and representatives of Life, Truth, and Love." My husband and I had occasion to witness the receptive child thought when our daughter was a baby and accidentally touched a hot oven door and badly burned her hands. We began immediately to declare aloud the simple truths that God is Love and that Love's child could not experience any discomfort or inharmony. We refused to be impressed by the picture of an injury and held our thought steadfastly to God's spiritual and perfect man. Once fear was replaced in our thought with a consciousness of God's presence and control, the child responded with quietness and sleep.
The next morning when she awoke, her fingers were swollen with blisters, but she was completely unaware of these aftereffects. She went about the day with her usual amount of energy and activity. To her innocent thought, error was nothing. Within a few days the material evidence disappeared. Mrs. Eddy writes (ibid., p. 472), "Error is a supposition that pleasure and pain, that intelligence, substance, life, are existent in matter." The grand truth demonstrated to us through the child's experience was that the only power error has is the power we give it.
