Spiritual Stillness

There is a certain stillness of thought that comes with a genuine demonstration of Christian Science, the law of God, that heals humanity. This stillness is spiritually tangible. It marks the actual realization of the presence of divine Mind and its ideas. It is evident to one who becomes conscious of the eternal unity of God and man. And the real Scientist works constantly to maintain the inner quietness that spiritual understanding reveals.

In today's restless world it is often difficult to maintain this inner quietness. People move around. Modern means of traveling, coupled with new modes of communication, provoke a restive mood. Mankind want to see what they hear about, and off they go! The material senses find a peculiar satisfaction in quick changes of scene, in new sensations, and this can become a tyrannical, materialistic demand. But too much sense excitement closes the door to heaven, the quiet realm of Spirit, where man is known as spiritual and as ever reflecting the divine stillness of Mind.

One who looks for healing himself, or who seeks to heal others, finds it essential to maintain spiritual stillness. Mary Baker Eddy, whose revelation of Christian Science has restored healing to Christian worship, says in Retrospection and Introspection, "The best spiritual type of Christly method for uplifting human thought and imparting divine Truth, is stationary power, stillness, and strength; and when this spiritual ideal is made our own, it becomes the model for human action."
