An Essential Integrity
Christ Jesus made one of his most dramatic statements when he told the chief priests and elders of the people that "the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you." Matt. 21:31; He was striking out against ritualism and hypocrisy in many forms. It is part of the modern trend of thought to uncover and denounce hypocrisy, to forsake the ritualistic way of worship, and to examine public as well as private morals. "There is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed," 10:26; and this is a healthy attitude.
Christian Science unfolds the scientific nature of religion and shows that in any scientific process it is utterly self-defeating to be dishonest in any way. Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: "Honesty is spiritual power. Dishonesty is human weakness, which forfeits divine help." And she adds: "Hidden sin is spiritual wickedness in high places. The masquerader in this Science thanks God that there is no evil, yet serves evil in the name of good." Science and Health, p.453;
But the whole purpose in denouncing error—either in our own thought or in another's—is to heal the individual and to free ourselves from a false state of thought. Exposing error or uncovering evil with any other motive than to heal is a dangerous business and can react on the instigator. Mrs. Eddy has given this direct counsel: "Do you desire to be freed from sin? Then help others to be free; but in your measures, obey the Scriptures, 'Be ye wise as serpents.' Break the yoke of bondage in every wise way. First, be sure that your means for doing good are equal to your motives; then judge them by their fruits." Miscellaneous Writings, p.90;
