My parents became interested in Christian Science through a healing I had in my early teens. I had been out of school for a year with what started as pneumonia and developed into a serious lung condition. A dear neighbor who was a Christian Scientist had talked to my mother about Christian Science, trying to show her that the right understanding of God through the study of Christian Science could heal me. My mother was a deeply religious person, her father and my father having both been Episcopal ministers, and she was very opposed to what she thought Christian Science was.

Finally the doctor told her that there was no hope for me. At that time, rather than lose her only child, my mother went to our neighbor and asked what could be done. She referred us to a Christian Science practitioner, who came to us immediately and began prayerful treatment for me. This practitioner was an early student of Christian Science, one who has a testimony in the chapter on Fruitage in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. After her visit everything in our medicine chest was thrown out, and God's power to heal was relied upon. My mother and I studied the Christian Science textbooks, the Bible and Science and Health, and received much help from frequent visits by the practitioner. I improved, and within three months all the symptoms were gone, my body was straight, and I was strong and back to normal weight.

I attended the Christian Science Sunday School until I was twenty, joined The Mother Church and a branch church, and there met a Christian Scientist whom I married.
