I wish to express my deep gratitude for Christian Science

I wish to express my deep gratitude for Christian Science. My parents became students of this religion while I was a baby, and I entered the Sunday School at the age of three years. I am grateful for the instruction I received from devoted teachers.

One winter, while I was in my teens, a very heavy cold left me deaf in one ear. My form mistress noticed I was having difficulty in hearing and sent me to the school doctor. She wrote home to say that my tonsils were enlarged, my uvula was touching one, and that this was the cause of the deafness. She ended by saying the condition needed treatment. My father thanked her but stated that as we were Christian Scientists I would have treatment from a Christian Science practitioner. The practitioner told me to keep in thought Mrs. Eddy's words: "There is but one primal cause. Therefore there can be no effect from any other cause, and there can be no reality in aught which does not proceed from this great and only cause" (Science and Health, p. 207). In a very short time my hearing was normal. When I wished to enter college for teacher training, I had to take a medical examination. At its close the doctor remarked on the healthy condition of my throat.

During my college years I was completely free from homesickness and was protected on two occasions when there were outbreaks of diphtheria.
