RADIO PROGRAM NO. 413 - Highway Safety and Christian Concern

[The participants are Judge Jerome Franke, who is a Christian Scientist, and Robert McKinnon.]

McKinnon: Many people have had very good driving instruction. They keep their brakes and equipment in good operating condition. They remember to fasten their seat belts when they're driving. But still they seem to have one mishap after another. And I'm wondering if from your experience on the bench you think anything can be done to improve this situation, such as better highway construction, more easily discernible road signs, that sort of thing.

Franke: Those things are important. But there is a great deal the individual himself can do. One test of how relevant an individual's religious convictions are is how they affect his performance as a driver. There is a connection between the quality of values we live and cherish—the way we view ourselves and others—and the quality of safety that we experience on the highway and off. The values in the Sermon on the Mount make for the best safety code of all. We might paraphrase, for example, one of Christ Jesus' teachings and say, "Blessed are the courteous: for they shall receive courtesy."
