I would like to share an experience that stands out to me as a milestone in many years of studying and endeavoring to practice Christian Science.
Over five years ago I got up in the night. A little later I found myself lying on the floor, feeling very ill. I called my husband, and he came to help me. I was not able to get up or even lift my head. I repeated over and over the Bible verse that came to me from Psalms (118:17): "I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord." I know I had read this verse many times before, but I had never given any particular thought to it. In a short time, with some assistance, I was able to get up and walk back to bed. The following morning I was perfectly normal. It seemed a strange experience to me, and I decided to call a practitioner. She gave me many reassuring thoughts. There was never any desire to consider medical treatment, although I did give the condition a name until it was pointed out to me that I was making a reality of error. Of course, I was grateful for the physical healing and, for a time, just grateful to be alive.
This experience kept coming to my thought. I wondered how I was to "declare the works of the Lord." I tried various activities, but none of these seemed to be the right place for me. After about three years of this searching for my right place I realized I needed to turn wholeheartedly to God. I prayed in Paul's words, "Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?" (Acts 9:6.) Then I listened. It then became quite clear to me that whatever constructive human activity I was engaged in gave me an opportunity to "declare the works of the Lord."
