Through my senior year of college my life had seemed lonely and uncertain because of a feeling of timidity, indecision, and a lack of confidence in myself. The thought of striking out on my own in the world did not appeal to me. I am very grateful for the joyous and full adulthood that has been mine since beginning the study of Christian Science. I have learned the truth of Christ Jesus' words, "The kingdom of God is within you" (Luke 17:21). Knowing this, I no longer hold back from new experiences and am no longer afraid to meet people.
The study of Christian Science has taken me happily through required military service and through several years of teaching and graduate study in America and overseas. It has brought me successfully through many rich experiences, including participation in several international work camps, and also through the job of leading an international work camp in rural Finnish Lapland. This latter opportunity brought many blessings because I relied on Christian Science to supply the lack due to my not having had any similar leadership experience before. At that time, in fact, I had not even had much work camp experience—only three weeks the previous summer. However, I knew that the teachings of this religion could bring me the wisdom and good humor that were needed to lead young people of many different nations through varying agricultural work projects in isolated and fairly rugged conditions. The work camp was a success.
Afterward the organizers in Helsinki were rather surprised at my turning back all the insurance forms unused. There had been no injury or illness among the young people serious enough to warrant filling one in during the six weeks of the camp. To me, this was an impressive example of the protecting power which comes to all concerned when one relies on God's leadership rather than on one's own.
