A Time of Promise

Despite material appearances, humanity today is witnessing a wonderful opportunity for progress. The promise of great good may seem caught deep in the throes of upheaval, but evil is being forced to the surface to be seen, handled, and annihilated.

Evil's greatest hope for continuing its disruption lies in being able to remain hidden. If it can only be let alone, its unseen machinations can continue. Its diabolical work may appear to increase. But it is self-destroyed, for evil's only power is to destroy itself. Hastening toward its doom, however, it appears to take on such formidable proportions that mankind tends to shrink in awe before it or react with rebellious extremes against it. But evil, once uncovered, will be destroyed, and in its place good will be seen, for the eternality of good is a fact of real being.

Throughout all human history this has been so. Empires have risen and fallen. In many instances the immediate wrongs they brought on have vanished, and the good has remained to influence institutions and governments. Caesar is gone, but the influence of Roman law remains. Throughout time mankind have progressed, and the level of human consciousness has risen.

Christ Jesus was not unfamiliar with social unrest. He lived in a time of slavery, oppression, and rebellion. He warned his followers that they would hear of famines, pestilence, wars, and rumore of wars. Yet in the midst of apparent evil he walked serene, for he knew, as Mrs. Eddy says, that "God reigns, and will 'turn and overturn' until right is found supreme." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 80;

This overturning is what is being witnessed today. It is bringing to the surface the latent hatred in human thought and, conversely, revealing mankind's great need to express more love. Christian Science shows that the great challenge facing mankind today is to express a love that is impartial, unchanging, universal, a love reflecting tints of the divine.

Unselfed love that seeks the good of others without letting the injection of human will spoil its motive stirs up no confusion.

"There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear," I John 4:18; states the Bible. Paul tells us that love "thinketh no evil." I Cor. 13:5; Love possesses no guile, and it is ridiculous to consider that violence can be a part of love. If love reigned supreme in every heart, there would be no cause for social unrest, racial tension, or war.

"But," groans weary humanity, "mankind seem so far from this ideal! How can they ever hope to realize it?" The individual can contribute to the present realization of universal love by beginning to watch and work for divine Love to reign supreme in his own consciousness. He should be able to answer joyously and affirmatively when he asks himself if he loves every member of his family, ever friend, every acquaintance. Does he expect to see love manifested toward himself? Does he have a loving, receptive thought toward those he has not met?

A loving state of thought would do much to brighten a part of the world and set an example for others to follow. But the student of Christian Science can and must do much more. It is his duty to understand, acknowledge, and constantly remind himself that because God is Love and God is All, Love is all there is. He must see that man, made in the image and likeness of God, does express love. He must recognize Love as the guiding influence of all right action and must assert Love's supremacy in every facet of the human scene. He must cling to the fact that Love's allness precludes the possibility of any opposing force or power. This state of thought not only harmonizes individual human experience but sends forth a powerful, purifying influence that blesses the world and hastens the time in which "right is found supreme."

The great challenge and need to love will be faced! The inevitable fact must be demonstrated that God, Love, is All-in-all. Here lies the promise of good beneath the throbbing sea of upheaval. We do indeed reside in a time of promise. Mrs. Eddy sums up the present period when she states, "We live in an age of Love's divine adventure to be All-in-all." The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 158. How grateful we can be to know and partake of "Love's divine adventure"!
