For years I have been blessed by reading the testimonies in the Christian Science periodicals and want to share some of the blessings that have come to me and my family as a result of putting this Science of Christianity to the practical test.

In my teens I kept myself free from the desire for tobacco and alcohol, but instead I found myself indulging frequently in the telling of dirty stories with my school friends. I repeatedly tried to stop, but I never abstained for more than a week or so at a time. After two years I became so unhappy with myself that I turned to Christian Science to relieve me of this hateful habit. In Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy I read (p. 68), "We ought to weary of the fleeting and false and to cherish nothing which hinders our highest selfhood."

In Sunday School I had learned the beatitude from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5:8): "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God." I knew that purity was the key to spiritual healing and the path to perfection. As I was not willing to give up my right as a child of God to avail myself at all times of God's healing presence, I knew that I must understand more clearly that purity of thought is the natural condition of the image of God. From that afternoon when I saw these truths, I never wanted to tell such stories again or listen to others tell them. And I was far happier in my newfound freedom. As I think back on the experience, it seems so far removed from me that it is difficult to imagine that it ever happened. Even though I have never related this experience before, it is one I am most grateful for because it freed my thinking to grow Godward.
