In the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures...
In the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy has quoted an old proverb (p. 266), "'Man's extremity is God's opportunity.'" These words aptly describe my circumstances in 1921. I was then suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis, for which I had been confined for a car's treatment in a sanatorium. Before I was discharged, the doctor informed me that I had improved but that I was unfit for work, and especially at an indoor occupation. He said, "If you had an income of five hundred pounds a year and could live an open-air life you might stand a chance, but to work in an office would prove fatal." I replied that I had faith and that I knew God would give me strength to work again, as I had not only myself to support but also an invalid mother and a delicate aunt.
On returning home I found great difficulty in obtaining employment, owing to my health record. Through the influence of a friend I obtained a part-time post as private secretary to a retired gentleman who was actively interested in many philanthropic organizations. One day, when feeling very ill, I asked him if he knew anything I could do or take to improve my health. My employer said, "What you need is Christian Science." He explained that he was not a Christian Scientist but that he knew it healed the sick. His wife and daughters were interested, and they lent me a copy of Science and Health. I was completely healed within twelve months through reading this book.
My mother, who had been bedridden for six years with heart trouble, seeing the wonderful change in my condition, asked for treatment from a Christian Science practitioner. In a few weeks she was well enough to accompany me to a church service, which entailed a short train and bus journey. Her complete healing followed, and she enjoyed an active life thereafter for thirty-three years.
