When I was quite young in the study of Christian Science, I...

When I was quite young in the study of Christian Science, I learned a valuable lesson in obedience. Our branch church was giving a Christian Science lecture, and I had been taught that one must support the lecture given by one's own church. One must go to give, not just to receive.

At that time I was going through a serious business problem, and all I could think of was, "Where will I hear the word of help?" I had just gone into a new business, manufacturing millinery. I had made the mistake of underpricing our labor costs. Although many human suggestions came to me from important businessmen, these did not seem to offer the proper solution. I needed enlightenment through Christian Science.

Two lectures were being given the same evening, one in the church of which I was a member, and the other on a secular topic by a very popular lecturer who was well known for his understanding of business. I was tempted to go to hear the lecture on business, yet I remembered that the lecture given by my own church needed my support. I was obedient to divine guidance. During the Christian Science lecture my attention seemed to wander until I turned completely away from my business and financial problem to supporting the lecture. Suddenly I heard the lecturer say, "Now I am going to tell you something about business. Profit is a spiritual idea." Having sought a spiritual idea through obedience, I had found it as profit in the true sense. Inspiration in the form of right ideas to take the needed human footsteps came flowing into my consciousness. Within two months I had a substantial profit, and never again has there been a retrograde step taken in my business. This was twenty years ago.
