Many years ago when in the Army in our former homeland, Switzerland, I became very ill. Three doctors gave me up. Although they did everything possible for me, I became worse each day. Everyone thought I would pass on.

I had read the Bible very often, or my mother had read to me. There was, therefore, a hope within me that this sickness would not end in death. I always knew there must be something, according to the Bible, which would heal me.

One day when things seemed very dark, a neighbor visited me and asked my mother and me why we did not try Christian Science. A practitioner who had been a school friend of my mother's lived just a few blocks from us. I was always very much against this religion and did not want my mother to go to the practitioner, but she said we had tried everything possible in medicine and felt we should try Christian Science. The practitioner told my mother to give me the food I usually liked. Error, as usual, told me that if f ate it I could not keep it down. Mother reminded me that the Bible says, "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good" (Gen. 1:31). She lovingly persuaded me to eat just a little, which I did. To my surprise, it stayed in my stomach and I had a better night than usual. The practitioner had given Mother citations from the literature of Christian Science to read to me while treatment in Christian Science was continuing.
