Mrs. Eddy tells us in Science and Health (p. 1), "Desire is prayer". When I was a new student of Christian Science, my desire and prayer was to be free from the appetite for alcohol. I had first indulged in social drinking, but over a period of ten years it had become problem drinking.

This was my first healing in Christian Science. A Christian Science practitioner was helping me. She told me I would get the right healing thought, which is all we ever need for a healing. The right thought came to me while I was attending a Wednesday evening testimony meeting in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. A woman testified about the use of alcoholic beverages in preparing cooked sauces. She stated it was her opinion that to spend one nickel on alcoholic beverages for any use was helping the downfall of our fellowmen. This thought helped me to see that my real desire was to help my fellowmen and that I could certainly do this by not taking a drink. This right thought destroyed any desire I had for alcohol in any form.
