Waken from the Dream of Suffering

How absurd it would be to attempt by physical means to relax the rigid muscles of one having a bad dream! In such a case would a physician resort massage, to drugs, or, in an extreme case, to amputation? No. He would know that the remedy is to waken the sufferer out of his overwrought mental condition called a nightmare. Then the body would relax.

The understanding of the mental nature of all discord and disease is vitally important. Mrs. Eddy writes, "To the Christian Science healer, sickness is a dream from which the patient needs to be awakened." Science and Health, p. 417; In this Science, the real, spiritual man is understood to be God's likeness and to be constantly under the harmonious control of divine Mind. Sickness is not part of the divine creation, and hence it is understood as unreal.

Perhaps the daydream, or false belief, of sickness appears on the body as paralysis. A Christian Scientist is asked for help. Even as he would not think in terms of physical causation in relation to the night-dream, he does not think of physical causation in regard to the daydream of disease. He proceeds to awaken the sufferer, and he does this by spiritual means, turning the patient's thought away from the physical sense testimony to the infinity of God, good, and the perfection of the real man made in His image. We read in Science and Health, "When we remove disease by addressing the disturbed mind, giving no heed to the body, we prove that thought alone creates the suffering." p. 400;
