"Man is sustained by God"
A healing system based upon matter looks to drugs, food, exercise, and other material means for substance, energy, and recuperation. The healing system of Christian Science looks to infinite Spirit, divine Principle, or God, as the source of all power and hence of all true energy and resuscitation. This Science explains that real intelligence and life are spiritual and that matter has no inherent ability to sustain life.
In many ways Christ Jesus taught his followers that Life is Spirit and that man reflects the power and presence of divine Life. Early in his experience, after he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was tempted of the devil to depend upon matter for sustenance. But he was able to prove that Spirit is the substance of man's being and that Life is independent of matter. In his many instances of healing he relied wholly upon the recuperative energy of divine Mind, not upon matter, as a healing agent. When he fed the multitude, he was proving that Spirit is the source of supply. In his final demonstration after the crucifixion, he proved the resuscitating power of divine Love to heal the wounds and revive the body.
Mrs. Eddy makes this fact plain in her statement from Science and Health, "In divine Science, man is sustained by God, the divine Principle of being." Science and Health, p. 530; Such a fact can be very effectively used in cases where recuperation is a prime requisite. Man reflects divine energy because he emanates from God as His expression. Man includes all the qualities of God; he is the compound idea of God. There is no lack of any essential element. He manifests Life; and that Life is eternal, self-sustained.
