For a number of years I have thought about giving this testimony in the hope that it might encourage others to meet the belief of the need for surgery as it was met in the experience of a member of my family. This dear one had been an active Christian Science practitioner for over fifty years. Having helped others as she had with so much understanding, she felt that when confronted with a severe physical problem herself she of course could meet this challenge with God's unfailing love.

However, after she had worked prayerfully for several months without success, I asked why she did not request help from a practitioner since she had not overcome the severe pain and much suffering through her own prayers. Mary Baker Eddy herself makes this recommendation in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures for those who are seeking relief (p. 420): "If students do not readily heal themselves, they should early call an experienced Christian Scientist to aid them." That very night she called a practitioner for treatment.

My sister, who is not a student of Christian Science, felt that this dear one should resort to medical aid because of the intense pain, and asked me what I thought. My only answer to her was that I thought she should consult this member of our family and abide by her wishes. This dear one said very definitely that she knew that only God could heal and that she would rely on Him only. Since she was very dear to both my sister and me, I was very grateful for the harmony that prevailed after her decision was made. There was much fear to be overcome on the part of my sister, but this also was worked out.
