It has been my blessing to have had Christian Science in my home from early childhood. At about age eight I accidentally put my hand through a pane of glass in a door and lacerated my wrist severely. My mother telephoned a Christian Science practitioner for help through prayer, while my grandmother and I declared over and over again the truths of "the scientific statement of being" on page 468 of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. This statement ends with the words: "Spirit is the real and eternal; matter is the unreal and temporal. Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual."

Since there was no Christian Science Visiting Nurse Service at that time, it was thought best to have a local physician close the wound. The physician complied with my mother's request to apply no medicine but merely remove the glass fragments and tape the wound. He said the fingers would probably become stiff and useless, so the practitioner was asked to work specifically about this. The belief of infection was also handled through prayer. The healing was complete, and I have always been able to use my fingers normally to do everything, including typewrite, sew, and play the piano.

A healing particularly outstanding in our own family of three children was that of a skin disease. When the rash appeared on the scalp and face of all three children, I was called to school by the nurse, who said it was contagious. I was told to keep them at home until it was gone. It seemed to be spreading the next day, so a Christian Science practitioner was called. She talked to one child, who was then about nine years of age, and explained that irritating thoughts regarding her sister had to be healed too. She was asked to learn the statement from Science and Health (pp. 476, 477), "Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals," and also to see her sister and herself as perfect children of God. A sincere effort was made by this little one to reflect love and patience, with the result that all three of the children were completely healed of rash in a day or two. A wart that had troubled the nine-year-old also fell off at the same time, and a growth that had appeared on my arm was healed. We were all very grateful for this proof of the truth of the Bible statement (Hebr. 4:12), "The word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword."
