In my early years I was plagued with many problems, one of which was a double hernia. For sixteen years I was in bondage to steel supports and was told by doctors that it would be fatal if I was not operated upon.

Then in 1917 I met the girl who soon after became my wife. She was a student of Christian Science. After our marriage we took up a serious study of Christian Science together. Soon afterward I was called to the draft for World War I and upon examination was rejected in a few minutes owing to this physical defect.

When I first opened the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, the very first line of the Preface, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings," impressed me deeply. Further down on the same page the statement, "The time for thinkers has come," opened my thought to receive good from the textbook. After a short time when I arose from my bed one morning and went to the basement to fire the furnace, I stooped over to lift a shovel of coal and felt a strange sensation, It seemed everything went into place. That morning for the first time in all the years I had not worn a support, but I was free. I stood up straight and thanked God and knew I was healed. Never have I needed the support since.
