Christian Science Church Center

PROGRESS REPORT No. 9

Most cities today are trying hard to make room for people amid towering buildings and massive highway systems, and Boston is no exception. But careful Christian Science Church Center plans take account of both pedestrians and commuters. Three subway stations already serve the immediate area, and a 550-car garage will meet the need for greatly increased parking facilities in the vicinity of The Mother Church and the new Administration Building.

The garage, unusual in shape—approximately 1,000 feet long and 180 feet wide—will be constructed underground directly beneath the reflecting pool that will grace the long central plaza of the Church Center project. At present all parking is handled by nearby commercial lots and a limited number of on-street parking spaces. After the completion of the Church Center these parking areas will not be available.

Location of the garage beneath the reflecting pool serves several purposes simultaneously. The garage roof will be a beamed girder network containing fountain and reflecting pool plumbing, lighting, and fire prevention sprinkler system for the garage. Ventilation will be by fresh air circulation of up to 150.000 cubic feet per minute.
