Fixed Principle and Rules
Today when many people are prone to make their own ethics in accord with situations, the teachings of Christian Science on the subject appeal as a great steadying influence. This Science reveals God as the fixed Principle of true ethics, and it shows how divine Principle is proved by fixed rules. A knowledge of Principle and its rules alone can destroy the illusion of matter and its ills that seems so fixed in human thought. Although obviously temporal and destructible—the very opposite of immortal Spirit, God—the fixed illusion of matter persists.
It is a marvelous thing to have a fixed Principle, which we can turn to in every kind of human difficulty, and to apply the rules it affords. Divine Principle is not a vague essence, nor is it an ethical standard humanly devised by society for maintaining harmony. The Bible calls Principle our Father in heaven, and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, written by Mary Baker Eddy, gives particular significance to Principle as divine Love.
Mrs. Eddy says: "If the Bible and my work Science and Health had their rightful place in schools of learning, they would revolutionize the world by advancing the kingdom of Christ. It requires sacrifice, struggle, prayer, and watchfulness to understand and demonstrate what these volumes teach, because they involve divine Science, with fixed Principle, a given rule, and unmistakable proof."
