My Air Force assignment is...

My Air Force assignment is that of crew member with the Special Air Missions Section. Upon first receiving my orders to an overseas base, I realized my need to become a serious student of my religion, Christian Science, if I was to overcome at the outset all fear of mechanical or personal failure while our planes were airborne, and if I was to overcome any false traits of character or disposition that might lessen harmony between me and other crew members with whom I must work in close quarters aboard planes, or between me and our passengers, often military officers who might at the moment be preoccupied or under strains of various kinds.

Reared in Christian Science, and a member of The Mother Church, I had been healed of several physical difficulties through enlightened prayer alone. And through the comforting ministrations of prayer as we understand it in Christian Science I had been freed of a crushing burden of grief after the sudden passing of a loved one. Therefore I had no doubt that divine Mind would impart to me all that I needed of courage, intelligence, and poise with which to do my job well. God would, I knew, meet each need right where and when it arose.

At my overseas base, I asked a Christian Science practitioner for help in spiritualizing my thinking about God and my relationship to Him and in spiritualizing my thinking about my work and my co-workers. This help was joyously given, and the results have been all that we expect of true prayer.
