Prior to my introduction to...
Prior to my introduction to Christian Science I had an operation to remove from my throat what was described medically as a ruptured benign tumor. Shortly after taking up the study of Science, I became aware that I was manifesting the same physical symptoms as had been evidenced before.
I prayed earnestly to know God's direction. As a very new student of Science, I didn't have a working understanding of what constituted a treatment; but I did know I needed help to lessen the fear that nearly dominated my thinking. I felt divinely led to the local Christian Science Reading Room and there had a talk with the attendant on duty. Her spoken and unspoken expression of Love's provision of goodness and blessing led me to ask her for the encouragement I needed so much.
Her guidance and support brought my first real appreciation of this Science, the ultimate Christianity. I began to glimpse the spiritual nature of man, made in the image and likeness of God. I experienced a growing awareness of His loving care. I prayed to see there could be no sensation, no pain, no anything in the material sense called matter; that, more than words, God, good, is all-presence, and there is no other activity or power.
One of many passages from Mrs. Eddy's works that brought much revelation and was called to my attention by the attendant states (Unity of Good, p. 60): "Christ cannot come to mortal and material sense, which sees not God. This false sense of substance must yield to His eternal presence, and so dissolve." Though the healing did not come for several months, I count this time as one of the most rewarding in my study of Science. For during this period I became convinced of the absolute truth of Christian Science and realized that if it was applied with understanding, healing must inevitably be the human effect.
I don't know exactly when the healing did occur. One day I just realized I no longer had any swelling, pressure, or pain. Though I felt the work was done. I still must have given some lingering consent to the claim of error, for one of the symptoms recurred several years later. Through the assistance of a practitioner, this was completely healed within two weeks.
A statement the practitioner directed me to study which was very helpful is from "Unity of Good" and reads (p. 54): "To say there is a false claim, called sickness, is to admit all there is of sickness; for it is nothing but a false claim. To be healed, one must lose sight of a false claim."
My gratitude for Mrs. Eddy is boundless. The magnitude of her gift to a world in need cannot be measured. I am also grateful for class instruction and for the ever-widening opportunity of serving the Cause of Christian Science.— Glen C. Livezey. West Chester, Pennsylvania.
