I wish to relate my first healing...
I wish to relate my first healing in Christian Science.
About forty years ago I was suffering intensely from an infected thumb. Our family physician treated it surgically twice; but the condition grew worse, and sleepless nights were brought about by the pain. Sedatives had no effect.
Early one morning I noticed what appeared to be blood poisoning developing in my arm. Very nervously I telephoned the doctor. He told me to rush over to his office immediately and to be sure to bring a friend with me.
In the meantime a neighbor dropped in unexpectedly. I was trembling with fear as I related to her the grave circumstance of my arm. The good neighbor advised me to try Christian Science. She told me of her own healings and recommended that I call a Christian Science practitioner. I did so.
The practitioner patiently listened to my story and then told me what Christian Science teaches of God and man. She also referred to this sentence from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (Pref., p. vii): "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." Her talk was so impressive that I craved to know more of Christian Science. As I hung up the receiver I realized that I was no longer plagued by fear or pain.
However, I kept my appointment with the doctor. When I arrived at his office I told him that all the pain had completely vanished. He looked at me skeptically and assured me that in twenty-four more hours a visit to him would have been too late to save my life. As politely as possible, I declined his prescriptions. I left his office in a very happy frame of mind.
The practitioner gave me treatment. In less than two weeks, a new nail had grown on the thumb, and, of course, the hand and arm returned to their normal condition.
A few months later, I met the doctor on the street. He was very much surprised to see me alive and said so. He told me that only a miracle could have taken place to produce such a wonderful change in me.
I am indeed very grateful for this healing and many others, and for the help and patience of practitioners. I am also very grateful for membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, for the opportunity to engage in various church activities, and, above all, for Christ Jesus and Mrs. Eddy.—(Mrs.) Josephine Tibbles, Los Angeles, California.
