WORDS OF CURRENT INTEREST
[The words in this issue are related to the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly designated to be read in Christian Science churches on February 2, 1964.]
If ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? (Luke 6:32)
The word charis (thank) is used in Greek in a rather wide variety of senses, including that of "favor, grace, graciousness, gracefulness, credit." Goodspeed well suggests the thought in the present context by rendering, "If you love only those who love you, what merit is there in that?" The New English Bible has, "What credit is that to you?"
