Replacing Objects with Ideas

According to Christian Science, God is divine Mind, and His creation is made up of spiritual ideas. To the material or mortal sense, these ideas appear as material things when actually the things are thoughts.

Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 123), "Divine Science, rising above physical theories, excludes matter, resolves things into thoughts, and replaces the objects of material sense with spiritual ideas." The question is: What becomes of the object that is replaced with a spiritual idea? Science exchanges one for the other metaphysically, not physically. That is, Science enables us to realize the presence of the idea of Mind right where the object of material sense seems to be.

To see the object thus does not destroy it or our sense of it but brings both the object and our sense of it under the control of divine law. For instance, a Christian Scientist is constantly replacing a material sense of himself with the spiritual sense. As a result, the faulty sense of himself undergoes correction and transformation. In this transitional period the spiritual sense of oneself preserves the human sense from harm, injury, disease, sin, and so forth, by one's recognizing the divine control to be supreme even in the human realm.
