LOVE

The healer said, "God loves you."
The words to me were new;
They seemed presumptuous. And yet
I wished it might be true.

How could a God in heaven
Love a man below?
How could He find a creature
He didn't even know,

Much less could love? And yet I
Was touched by the beautiful word.
"Love, love," I found myself whispering,
Then tried to say, "Absurd!"

But I couldn't. Because a stirring
Tore me free from the pull of earth;
I rose from the slum of the scoffer
To the bliss of a blessed new birth.

The healer said, "God loves you."
I know that this is true
Because I am so full of love
For you, and you, and you.
