"The fruit forbidden"
When I was serving on the executive board of a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, a woman who was applying for membership related to us how she had become interested in Christian Science. She told us that she had been ill for some time, and her prospects for recovery were not promising. A friend brought her a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. As she opened the book, her eyes fell upon these words in a marginal heading on page 481: "The fruit forbidden."
She said she had often wondered what the Biblical forbidden fruit was and so she focused her attention upon this explanatory sentence: "The forbidden fruit of knowledge, against which wisdom warns man, is the testimony of error, declaring existence to be at the mercy of death, and good and evil to be capable of commingling."
As she thought about this, she realized that in believing her existence to be at the mercy of death, she was eating of the forbidden fruit. This seemed rather startling to her. She glanced at other pages of the book and became so interested that in a few days she asked for help from a Christian Science practitioner and was completely healed.
