In November, 1960, I was involved in an automobile accident in San Francisco and was taken unconscious to a hospital.
After gaining consciousness, I asked to be removed to the Sanatorium of the Christian Science Benevolent Association on Pacific Coast, but was denied that request by the doctors who said I was in no condition to lie moved. They X-rayed my head and body and said that I had a concussion of the brain, fractured ankles, and a broken collarbone and that they were going to put a brace on me and operate on the right side of my nose, which they said was broken.
I told them I was a Christian Scientist and that I would appreciate it if they did none of these. After I had pleaded with the doctors to permit me to return to the motel where I had engaged a room, they held a consultation. One of them returned and said that his aunt was a Christian Science practitioner, that he admired my stand, and that he had persuaded his colleagues to permit me to leave, provided I immediately called for Christian Science treatment.
