Christian Science had been...

Christian Science had been the only religion and physician in our home for years before my birth, and I grew up a faithful attendant at a Christian Science Sunday School. However, I become deeply disturbed and unhappy: feelings of inferiority made me a very unlovely person with few friends, and I began to escape more and more into dreams of success.

Although I had usually been good in studies, fear and lack of reliance on the one Mind caused near failure in the practice teaching required at the end of my college course. I seemed also to be a failure in the application of the teachings of Christian Science and unreceptive to the prayers of others. Hence my first teaching position was a very unhappy situation and was lost after a few months.

The weeks following my dismissal were filled with periods of darkness and despair, but I turned frequently to the Christian Science periodicals, which our Leader so wisely provided for our use. At first I seldom grasped much of what I read; but a single phrase or sentence would stand out and bring me a measure of peace. I seemed to know little beyond the letter of Christian Science; but as I began to desire to learn, my thought began gradually to awaken to the truth. The first sign of progress was the harmonizing of relationships with a critical landlady by my acknowledging that the situation needed to be healed rather than endured.
