In Jesus' parable of the prodigal...

In Jesus' parable of the prodigal son recorded in the fifteenth chapter of Luke's Gospel we read (verse 24), "This my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found." There was a time in my life when I was lost in despair; I was suffering from lack and also needed very much to regain a stable sense of peace and harmony.

This temporary loss of good resulted in my failure to recognize and utilize the practical truths of God and His idea, man, presented in Christian Science. However, I am grateful to my mother for her tireless efforts, constantly supported by my father, which resulted in my regular attendance from early youth at a Christian Science Sunday School. The basic truths of God's spiritual creation were thus firmly established in my consciousness; and though later obscured by the mist, or false claims, of materialism, these truths could not be washed away or impaired.

Drawn toward the false attraction offered by materialism, I forced myself to practice and enjoy the habits of smoking and social drinking. I had been convinced that what I was doing would secure for me popularity and success. This, however, was not and could not be so; in fact, I lost true friendship, and success was a complete stranger during this experience.
