Over twenty years ago Christian Science was presented to me by our daughter's music teacher. My mother had passed on, after having been ill for five years. I could not understand why. She was always ready to help all in need, kind and loving to us, and a good Christian. The Bible has this promise (John 8:51): "If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death." Why did Jesus make such a promise when I had had to stand by and see my mother die? I was very bitter, and I was suffering from attacks of gall bladder trouble. Also I was experiencing a great deal of pain from another internal difficulty.

I went to see the family physician. He said the second condition necessitated an operation. I knew that I did not want an operation, and I told the doctor so. His answer was, "You can go on possibly for three or four years, but you will be back to see me."

From his office I went to the music teacher's studio and asked to borrow a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. By the time I had read the first chapter, which is on Prayer, I knew I had found what I had always been looking for. The first change I noticed was that I gained a wonderful peace of mind, something I had not really experienced before. I became so engrossed in reading the book and in studying the Lesson-Sermons, outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly, that I did not know when the pain disappeared, but it went, as did the gall bladder condition.
