The question, "What is life?" has challenged the best thinkers of the ages. They have long queried the origin or source of life and speculated concerning its essences—what it is that gives living, breathing qualities to human existence. Some material theorists believe that life begins in an egg or in a seed, and from this beginning they account for many forms of life known to men. But the theorists are not able to explain where the egg or the seed originated.
