In the year 1925, while an active member of an orthodox church, I took the chair at a course of lectures on modern religions. The subject dealt with at one meeting was Christian Science. The lecturer found little good in it, and Mary Baker Eddy was strongly criticized for her methods of practice. After the lecture the meeting was thrown open to the audience for comment or discussion on the subject.
Several people spoke. Then a man stood up and said he had been discharged from a hospital with what was said to be an incurable case of diabetes. He had been led to enter a Christian Science Reading Room. He said that the librarian had been very kind, had given him an encouraging talk, and had sent him home with a book to read. Through reading the book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, he had been healed in three months and was then strong enough to be working with a pick and shovel as a navvy.
At that time I was suffering from chronic bronchitis and stomach trouble, from which I had recently been told by a medical specialist I would not recover. I was keeping myself going by the use of drugs. After that evening I did not go back to the orthodox church. I started the study of Christian Science, and my healing came slowly. I was a port health officer, and to forsake the drugs was a great struggle; but bit by bit as I learned how to practice what I understood, and with the help of Christian Science practitioners and friends, I was healed.
