WORDS OF CURRENT INTEREST

[The words in this issue are related to the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly designated to be read in Christian Science churches on April 16, 1961.]

Letters (John 7:15)

This word clearly does not refer to letters of the alphabet, or ABC's, since Jesus would have attended the synagogue school at Nazareth with other children of his age. Then, as well as now, "letters" often meant "literature" or "higher learning," as in our phrase "a man of letters." The people were amazed by the Master's depth of understanding, gained without his having attended one of the scribal colleges of the day.
