Reflection and Possession

If a man stands before a mirror with a dollar bill in his hand, the reflection in the mirror also holds a dollar bill identical with the one in the man's hand. But there is a vital difference: As long as the dollar bill is in the man's hand, the bill in the mirror cannot be lost; it cannot be stolen; it cannot be destroyed. The reason: The man himself possesses the dollar bill; the image in the mirror possesses it only by reflection.

Many of our human fears seem to be concerned with possession. We are afraid we may lose health or love or security or life. Christian Science teaches that man is God's reflection. God is immortal Spirit, divine Love, limitless Truth, ever-present Life. Mrs. Eddy says on page 475 of Science and Health: "Man is idea, the image, of Love; he is not physique. He is the compound idea of God, including all right ideas; the generic term for all that reflects God's image and likeness; the conscious identity of being as found in Science, in which man is the reflection of God, or Mind, and therefore is eternal; that which has no separate mind from God; that which has not a single quality underived from Deity; that which possesses no life, intelligence, nor creative power of his own, but reflects spiritually all that belongs to his Maker."

Christ Jesus demonstrated the facts of reflection and possession. A man whose health had apparently been lost through a disease called palsy was instantly restored. Jesus knew that the real man has never lost his health. A man infected with leprosy, his social status gone, was made whole. The real man can never lose purity or love. When tax money was needed, Jesus instructed a disciple to find it in a fish's mouth. The real man never lacks substance. To a woman following her son's funeral procession, Jesus restored her son, alive. The real man never loses his life.
