MOTIVE

Althea Brooks Hollenbeck

Would I have, while unwilling to earn
or know, without intent to learn?
Would I find, never seeking, or enter within
the heavenly gates, holding fast to my sin?

Deliver me, God, from such shame!
Let me rise to a nobler aim.
Let me try to deserve, with humility,
and take not Thy good without homage to Thee.
