UNDERSTANDING OF SOUL ESSENTIAL

Among the synonyms for God used by Mary Baker Eddy in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," is Soul. Without some comprehension of this particular synonym of God it is not possible to understand Him fully or to know what is meant by the beauty of holiness.

Our Leader writes (ibid., p. 269), "Metaphysics resolves things into thoughts, and exchanges the objects of sense for the ideas of Soul." These ideas of God express all the loveliness of heaven; they are indestructible and, therefore, everlasting. Soul bears witness to the perfection of man and the universe and holds forever in consciousness the beauty of all real being.

In contemplating these metaphysical facts, a student of Christian Science may well ask, How can I apply these truths to correct the seemingly ugly pictures which confront me in my human experience, for my eyes are forced to look continually upon unpleasant things and my ears to listen to much I would rather not hear?
