FULFILLING OUR REASON FOR EXISTING

There was one basic reason for Christ Jesus' success in his mission and in the establishment of his church: he healed mankind. This gave authority and substance to his every word.

Jesus' recognition of the spiritual nature of man as the image and likeness of God, inseparable from his Maker, was the power which restored healthy bodies to the deformed, the blind, the dumb, the sick, the deaf, and opened to these individuals the possibility of living normal, happy, useful lives. This same understanding of man's real identity broke the dream of pain and pleasure in matter and thus reclaimed the sinner. The Master's unswerving acknowledgment of the omnipotence and omnipresence of God, divine Love, assured his success.

He knew and expected that those who were firm and constant in their love of what he taught would demonstrate the same healing power. He said (Mark 16: 17,18), "These signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."
