For over thirty years Christian Science...

For over thirty years Christian Science has sustained me in every way. I should like to express my deep gratitude for all that our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, has done for mankind. The hymns in the Christian Science Hymnal have helped us on many occasions, especially those whose words were written by Mrs. Eddy.

During World War II, our Leader's hymn "The Mother's Evening Prayer," which opens with the words (Poems, p. 4), "O gentle presence, peace and joy and power," was a shield for both myself and my young daughter. Once when my husband was firewatching at a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, there was a heavy aerial raid over our district. It was evening, and we had no light. My daughter and I were alone, but we were quite unafraid as I sang from memory the words of all the seven poems which were written by Mrs. Eddy and which appear in the Hymnal. During the raid our windows were blown open by the force of a land mine which fell nearby, but we were untouched and quite safe.

Recently I was healed of a goiter which appeared to be developing. Although I worked to see its unreality as we learn to do in Christian Science, it did not readily disappear. My sister, who was staying with us, had shared some of the beautiful truths she had received when she was in Boston attending the Annual Meeting of The Mother Church. One night I awoke suddenly, feeling as if a knife had been drawn across my throat, and I was free. I was overjoyed to find that through this healing, my singing voice had also been completely restored in volume and capacity.
