Before I knew anything about...

Before I knew anything about Christian Science, I was very ill with a severe nervous breakdown and a distressing heart condition. I went to the doctors for a long time, but their treatment did not benefit me at all; and I became almost an invalid. I had my husband and three young children to look after, and everything appeared hopeless.

At this juncture two friends from another city came to see me. We had a long talk about Christian Science and what it could do for me. They gave me a copy of The Christian Science Journal to read and advised me to get in touch with a practitioner. I read the Journal and also got in touch with a Christian Science practitioner, who took up prayerful work for me. Although I did not have a quick healing, I gradually improved. I began to realize that we are not subject to man-made material laws, but only to God's laws and that Christian Science is really the Comforter promised by Jesus in the fourteenth chapter of John.

My complete healing came when I lost all fear of the heart condition through reading this statement in "Miscellaneous Writings" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 50): "We do believe, and understand—which is more—that there must be a change from human affections, desires, and aims, to the divine standard, 'Be ye therefore perfect;' also, that there must be a change from the belief that the heart is matter and sustains life, to the understanding that God is our Life, that we exist in Mind, live thereby, and have being. This change of heart would deliver man from heart-disease, and advance Christianity a hundredfold."
