One of the basic discoveries we...

One of the basic discoveries we make through the study of Christian Science is that the only things we can see objectified in our human experience are the things of which we are conscious. Being conscious of discord, inharmony, and fear results in sickness, lack, and unhappiness being objectified in our human experience. In the same way, when we are conscious of harmony, joy, and contentment, we see objectified in our human experience health, abundance, and happiness.

This fundamental truth became more apparent to me through its practical application to my military experience. Before I entered the service various erroneous suggestions of fear and of being deprived of my freedom were overcome through the understanding that whether I was in uniform or in civilian attire, whether I was in an Army camp or at home, I had only one enemy, and that was mortal mind. I saw that by holding to the truth that in reality there was no enemy either to kill or be killed and that I neither hated any group of people nor could they hate me, I would not have to experience physical combat. The remainder of my military experience bore out in a very practical way the truth of that realization.

Following basic training I was sent to an Army Intelligence School. Upon completion of the course there I was stationed at an Army office in my home town and was allowed to live at home and to continue serving in my branch church. Because of the nature of my work I was entirely divorced from the Army routine.

A sense of disappointment resulting from a transfer from my home to an office one hundred and twenty miles distant was completely overcome after I became established in a Christian Scientist's home. The change of offices afforded me a greater opportunity for study, and I realized that this truly was a time for progress. That same year, which was the year following my induction, I was allowed to take my furlough during the time my prospective Christian Science teacher held his class. This allowed me to take class instruction and was positive proof to me that nothing can stand in the way of right activity. My entire experience in the military service showed me that in reality there are no problems—only opportunities for proving the supreme power of God, good.

For all the increased freedom and harmony that Christian Science has brought into my experience and is bringing to the world, I shall be continually grateful. The debt I owe to our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for discovering the Science of Christianity and giving it to the world is one that I shall never be able to liquidate.—Arthur Leonard Zwetow, Detroit, Michigan.
