On page 494 of Science and Health...

On page 494 of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy we read, "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." I should like to express my gratitude for a demonstration of this truth. One winter the tenants of the apartment house in which I lived were warned that the cost for heating would be more than that of the previous year on account of the increased price of coal. At the end of that winter the bill for the heating came in, and we were greatly suprised to find that the amount of it was very much higher than we had expected to pay. All the tenants of the house joined together and made a complaint to the manager. He replied that the charge for heating was divided proportionally for each tenant according to the cost of the coal; therefore he could not help us.

As a Christian Scientist, I felt that this situation must be worked out through God's law of order and government. Every day I declared that God alone governed and that all concerned reflected the one Mind which created them. I affirmed that they were obedient to this Mind and therefore reflected honesty, loyalty, equity, justice, fidelity, and brotherly love. From time to time I would declare these truths, knowing that faithful efforts never fail. Mrs. Eddy tells us in Science and Health (p. 16), "The highest prayer is not one of faith merely; it is demonstration."

The following year, when I received the bill for the winter's heating, to my great joy, I noticed that the bill was 10 per cent less than for the winter before. God's law of divine justice had operated to bless not only one, but all the tenants of the house. For this proof of God's protecting power and of His law of adjustment, my gratitude is great, for there is nothing so small or so big that God cannot heal it.
