For many years the Bible and the...
For many years the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, have been a source of inspiration to me. Through the study of these books our tender Father-Mother God has become increasingly nearer and dearer to me. My desire, as far back as I can remember, had been to understand the Bible, but not until I gained some knowledge of God as taught in Christian Science was this accomplished in an appreciable degree. Through this understanding and through the work of devoted practitioners, each member of our family has been blessed.
Joy, felt and expressed, has been a great factor in these healings. For instance, our son when a small child had been ill for over two weeks. No name was given the difficulty, but it was evidenced by an unsightly skin condition, and his little legs were so swollen at the joints that he could not stand. He also cried if taken into the light, so that it was necessary to keep him in a darkened room. During this period a number of friends gathered at our home to enjoy a Thanksgiving holiday. After dinner we spent the afternoon around the piano, all joining in singing hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal. I was sitting in an adjoining room with the baby where I also could participate in the singing, when suddenly our son slipped from my lap and toddled to his grandmother, asking for something to eat. All evidence of the difficulty had disappeared, and he was completely healed.
At another time I received a telephone message that our daughter had fallen down a marble stairway and seemed to be badly hurt. I called a practitioner at once and asked for treatment to quiet my fears. She said only a few words to me, but they were potent to heal. She asked me if my daughter had broken one of God's laws when she fell, and I said "No." These words of Mary Baker Eddy's found on page 381 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" came quickly to my thought: "We cannot in reality suffer from breaking anything except a moral or spiritual law." This healing of fear enabled me to care for our daughter confidently, knowing that in reality all was well, with the result that no adverse effects were experienced from the accident.
